Athens Drive amassed 586 yards of offense en route to a convincing 49-28 victory over Apex on Friday night.
The Jaguars improved to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the Tri-Nine Conference while the Cougars fell to 2-5 and 2-8.
Apex also displayed a potent offense by jumping out to an early 14-7 lead. But Athens Drive stormed back with 28 straight points to grab a commanding 35-14 lead in the third stanza.
Junior quarterback Adam Nelson tossed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Darrius Lassiter to cut the margin to 35-21. Nelson finished the game by completing 22 of 33 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns.
The Jaguars had far too much firepower, however, as tailback KyRee Green and quarterback Ben Snotherly hit pay dirt on runs of 5 and 12 yards, respectively, for a 42-21 cushion.
Green paced the Athens Drive attack with 26 rushes for 241 yards and three touchdowns.
Tavon Littles returned an interception 89 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the Jaguars their biggest lead at 49-21.
Nelson scored on a three-yard run to cap the scoring.
The Cougars’ disappointing season comes to a close Friday night when they host Middle Creek (7-0, 9-1), which clinched the conference championship Friday night with a victory over Fuquay-Varina.
