Peter and Sharon Galluzzo were thrilled when the Apex Historical Society asked them to film its oral history project.

Owners of Apex Home Video Studio, the Galluzzos felt honored to play a role in the effort to document their town’s history.

Now they have another reason for feeling excited about the project.

The Galluzzos recently earned three Hanley Awards at the Ninth Annual Home Video Studio Getaway at the Mirage in Las Vegas. The Hanleys, which are the industry’s version of an Oscar, were presented during a black-tie affair attended by studios from Sweden, Canada, and the United States. The Apex studio won in the categories of Best Event Video, Best Open House, and Best Video Lifestories, the last of which included the history project.

The history video consisted of Peter filming Apex natives and octogenarians Jacque Goodwin Burgess, Annie Ruth Cash Maynard, Grace-Marie Blades Elliott and Jeanne Sutton Hack as they shared special memories about their hometown.

“I’m really proud of that one,” said Peter. “It was a privilege to be a part of it. Those women sat around a table and told these wonderful stories about old Apex and what it was like to grow up here. I just feel fortunate that I was able to film it.”

“It was very special,” said Sharon. “We have lived in Apex for 11 years and to hear these stories about what the town was like when they were growing up was wonderful.”

The Best Event Video featured the student work of Carolina Ballroom of Cary while the third Hanley was awarded for the Red Carpet World Premier Grand Opening held in October of 2008. The Galluzzos also won the Relationship Mindset Award that recognizes their strong relationship with the community and customers.

In all, the Apex business was nominated for seven awards, an impressive number when considering the studio only opened last year.

“We’re real happy about it,” said Sharon. “It gives us a lot of confidence and makes us feel like we are doing the right thing for our customers. It’s a nice feeling when you can help preserve memories for people and also help create new ones.”
