Manley Pershing “Perk” Braswell, 73, of Smithfield, NC died at home February 12, 2010 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

He was a Christian husband, a loving father and grandfather, and had a beautiful tenor voice. Perk joined the U. S. Postal Service in 1961 and served as Postmaster in Benson from 1971 until 1995.

Blenda Gray Braswell, his wife of 48 years; a daughter and her family, Kim, Bobby, Christopher and Caroline Nichols of Apex; and a son and his family, Kevin, Debbie and Alexander Braswell of Cary survive him.

Other family members are his brother Spencer Braswell of Smithfield and his sisters Marian Dobb of Raleigh and Helen Mooneyham of Graham.

His sister Marie Jones and his brother Eugene “B” Braswell predeceased him.

Perk was a former member of the Kiwanis Club in which he received the 1995/96 Kiwanian of the Year Award. He was also a former member of the Johnston County Choral Society. He was a church choir and quartet member for many years, first at Pisgah Baptist Church and later at First Baptist Church of Smithfield. Other than his passion for singing, Perk’s hobbies included playing golf, bee-keeping and working in the yard.

His grandchildren fondly remember sharing his love of trains and being ticky-tocked by him when they were younger.

Family and friends remember Perk as a gentle, kind, humble and generous man. A suggestion for memorial gifts is a donation to Alzheimers NC, Inc., 400 Oberlin Rd., Suite 220, Raleigh, NC 27605.
