Peggy Swan is a two year diamond-level sponsor of the Devils Ridge charity golf tournament to benefit the Pretty in Pink Foundation.
A diamond sponsor of the Pretty in Pink charity golf tournament at Devils Ridge Golf Club for the past two years, Peggy Swan is a Midwestern transplant to North Carolina.
She met her late husband Jerry when she worked as an electrical engineer at
Caterpillar in Illinois. Shortly after their marriage, the couple transferred to North Carolina so Jerry could open the Caterpillar plant in Clayton. After four years in England, they returned to North Carolina. Members of Devils Ridge since their return, they quickly became active participants in the life of the Devils Ridge family.
Nearly two years ago, after a brave 18 month battle with lung cancer, Peggy’s beloved husband died. During the course of his treatment, Peggy was never far from his side. S From his side, she saw first-hand the courage of many other cancer patients as well. Fortunately, insurance was available for her husband’s treatment, but Peggy knew from her experience during the Pretty in Pink tournaments at Devils Ridge that not all patients are so lucky. She states that her heart goes out to those who must endure difficult treatment. Knowing that many patients forego treatment because they cannot afford it, Peggy is glad to be able to contribute to an organization which provides this life-saving therapy.
Pretty is Pink is just such an organization. With a mission statement of providing quality, life-saving medical treatment for those diagnosed with breast cancer without the safety net of insurance to cover the cost of prescribed treatments, The Pretty in Pink Foundation is the only organization of its kind in North Carolina. Each patient, or Champion as the staff at the Foundation calls them, is treated on an individual basis with a plan customized for him/her.
The process of managing the health care treatment for a breast cancer patient requires the careful coordination of medical professionals, surgeons, hospitals, oncologists and radiation oncologists. The Foundation not only manages the complex process for patients but also takes care of their financial responsibilities by fund raising, getting hospitals and physicians to accept Medicare levels of reimbursement, or possibly paying Cobra payments for a patient. In short, a creative, savvy approach to the treatment of each patient is the way that Pretty in Pink stretches dollars to provide the greatest amount of good for the greatest number of patients. All this is accomplished while making each Champion feel like the most important person in the world.
The Devils Ridge Ladies Golf Association (LGA) has been active in supporting the Foundation through its annual charity golf tournament for each of the last seven years. This year the tournament will be held on Thursday, May 16. As usual, the tournament sold out quickly with a full field of 142 golfers. Local corporations, merchants and service providers have once again been extremely generous in their support.
The day is filled with golfers who all wear pink, on-course snacks provided by area businesses, skills contests, raffles, silent auction items, a continental breakfast, lunch following play, but also with recognition of breast cancer survivors as well as remembering those who have succumbed to breast cancer.
The LGA tournament has been so successful that the Foundation is launching another tournament at Lonnie Poole golf course on June 19.
