Apex High students look to raise awareness
Are children who dine regularly with their families more likely achieve good grades and stay out of trouble? Is “fast fashion” a waste of resources and harmful to the environment? These are the main questions raised by Apex High School students in their recently completed Family Career and Community Leaders of America projects. Fairview Garden Center got its start almost 40 years ago through Jo Ann Dewar’s interest in gardening. Fairview is situated on 13 acres that was once the Dewar family farm. Back in the early 70s, Dewar’s husband bought her several greenhouses where she could indulge her passion for growing things. Gov. Pat McCrory announced the formation of a new center that will study ways to make schools safer last week during a press conference held at Apex Middle School. Longtime Wake County educator Kym Martin will lead the center, which falls under the Department of Public Safety. Also attending the conference were Department of Public Safety Secretary Kieran Shanahan, Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson and Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison.
