Drugs Uncovered: What parents need to know! The Poe Center’s Drugs Uncovered: What parents need to know! is coming to Apex Middle School on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The Poe Center for Health Education, Apex Middle School and Apex Middle School PTA are challenging you – we want to see if you can identify any of the 70 references to drugs and alcohol hidden in a “life like” teenager’s bedroom.
The bedroom is part of the Poe Center’s interactive program, Drugs Uncovered: What parents need to know! Drugs Uncovered will inform you of: current drug trends, teen culture, signs of substance use and abuse and much, much more.
It will also give you the tools you need to effectively talk with your teens about drugs and alcohol. To pre-register for this program register online at http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22BZFCFRMUT/

Baucom Elementary will host the 6th Annual Baucom Buddies Marathon on Friday, April 15. Over 430 elementary students signed up in December to walk or run a 26.2 marathon while logging their miles at home. With the help of their parents, they had just over three months to complete 25 miles on their own.
All participants will walk or run together to complete the final 1.2 miles of the Marathon. At 2:00 pm on April 15 students, staff, parents, and honored guests will be there to cheer the participants on. Everyone completing the marathon will receive a metal, a great feeling of accomplishment, and an incentive to keep on moving. This program is designed to help kids find fun in exercising while learning about goal setting, self-discipline and perseverance. The major objective is to encourage families to work with their children to fight off childhood obesity. Oak Grove Elementary School
Oak Grove Elementary PTA will be hosting a Community Yard Sale and Vendor Event on Saturday, April 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school located at 10401 Penny Road, Raleigh.
The event is being held to try to raise funds to purchase SmartBoards for each classroom at the school. A SmartBoard is an interactive whiteboard that uses touch detection the same way as a mouse or keyboard. A projector is used to display a computer’s video output on the interactive whiteboard, which then acts as a large touch screen. The school currently has 18 SmartBoards in various classrooms.
The PTA has organized a Community Yard Sale and Vendor Showcase. School families are invited to donate household items to sell at the Yard Sale.
Local vendors are invited to showcase their products and services as part of the Vendor Showcase at the event. Local small businesses will have booths selling various items and will donate a portion of their sales to the PTA for the fundraiser.
The PTA hopes to raise $68,000 to cover the purchase of the new SmartBoards and will donate all proceeds of the Yard Sale and a portion of the vendor sales to the SmartBoard Fund.
Please come out and support your community on Saturday April 2. Another man’s trash is another man’s treasure! Come see what you can find at this huge community yard sale! Olive Chapel Elementary School
