On Tuesday, November 8, the polls will be open in Apex and it is yet to be determined who our new leadership will be. There are two candidates running for mayor; incumbent Keith Weatherly, who has been mayor for four terms and his opponent, mayor pro tem, Bryan Gossage.

There are two council seats available this year as well. Incumbent Bill Jensen is running for re-election and there are four candidates vying for a possible two seats. Those four candidates are: Margo Bills, Darren Eustance, Scott Lassiter and John Lynde.

The Apex Chamber of Commerce does not endorse candidates. We do however support issues. As a pro-business organization, we will be listening to those wishing to gain a spot on council (and claim the title of ‘mayor’) for an attitude that supports the business community.

In an effort to help educate our business community, the Apex Chamber will be holding a Candidates Forum on October 25th at the Halle Cultural Arts Center. The event will start at 7:00pm. All candidates who have filed will be invited to attend. The forum will give attendees the opportunity to hear opinions, positions and philosophies from each candidate on what they believe to be the best approach for Apex.

The Candidates Forum is open to the public, register online at www.apexchamber.com and click on the event in the events calendar module. Space is limited, register early.

New Community Website

A new community website, www.apexweather.com is now available for the local community to use as one local bulletin board for announcements, events and news.

The new website, which is managed by the Apex Chamber of Commerce, has been very popular so far. Community members are able to post their news and events simply by clicking the “submit news” tab on the right hand side of the website. Once approved, the news/event will be posted. This is a free service provided to the community.

The Chamber gets numerous requests from churches, civic groups and nonprofits who want the community to know what they are doing and also want ONE place to go to for all community news. We hope to fulfill that need in Apex with this site.

Apex Idol – Casting Call

The Apex Chamber of Commerce is hosting Apex Idol this year on October 13th as part of our annual awards ceremony.

We are seeking singing/vocalist to compete in this fun and philanthropic competition. Preferably, the contestants will be Apex residents and/or business people who work in Apex.

The winner of the competition will be granted $1,000 to donate to the local charity of their choice. (The donation check will be made directly to the non-profit with an active 501c3 tax exempt status.)

Auditions will take place on August 31, 2011 beginning at 7:00pm at Peak United Methodist Church located at 1200 North Salem Street, Apex, NC 27502.

Please email info@apexchamber.com to register for auditions. There is no fee to audition and remember, if you win, you will be able to donate $1000 to the charity of your choice.

We began promoting this event more than 8 weeks ago, even though we did not know where the $1,000 would come from, but we had faith that a generous business would step up to sponsor and, last week, that happened. Modern Woodmen of America is sponsoring this event.

We know there is a lot of great talent in Apex. Let’s make this a community event that grants exposure to our community as well as the non-profits they would like to sing for.

Apex Christmas Parade

The annual Apex Christmas Parade will be held on December 3, 2011 at 5:00pm. The parade has been an annual tradition in Apex for more than 50 years and is made possible by the joint efforts of the Apex Rotary Club and the Apex Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds from the event go directly back into the community. Last year, the Apex Rotary Club was able to donate more than $4000 to Western Wake Crisis Ministry, the only food bank in Apex, as a result of the parade revenue. The Apex Chamber of Commerce offers its services as a donation – we do not receive any funding from the Rotary Club or the town of Apex for our efforts.

Registration forms for parade entries are available. Visit www.apexrotary.org to download a registration form. Registration forms must be submitted prior to October 31, 2011. For more information, contact the Apex Chamber of Commerce at 362-6456 or info@apexchamber.com.
