Apex Police Chief Jack Lewis announced his retirement Monday, after seven years as Apex Chief and 37 years of law enforcement service.

“During his tenure in Apex, our police department has evolved into one of the finest departments anywhere,” said Town Manager Bruce Radford. “Whether the incident was as great as his hands-on involvement in the EQ incident, or the more often routine administrative duty, Chief Lewis could always be counted on to excel in every way possible.”

Radford noted that the town will begin a broad and open search for a chief of police with the combination of experience, knowledge, expertise, and integrity Chief Lewis has demonstrated. The goal is to have the new chief on board by mid to late December.

Lewis’ retirement will be effective on or about January 1, 2013.

Lewis says his replacement “will be given the opportunity of a lifetime to be part of a community second to none and to be associated with the finest local government employees I have ever known, and a police department where the employees live and model their core values… pride, integrity and service every day.”

Apex Mayor Keith Weatherly commented, “Apex citizens have been exceptionally fortunate to have a man with the dedication, experience and most of all, integrity, of Chief Jack Lewis. We have enjoyed one of the lowest crime rates anywhere due in large measure to his ability to inspire his officers with the same commitment he has for public service.”

Lewis says retirement will give him time to spend with his family who supported him throughout his law enforcement career.
