Imagine opening a box sent to you in the mail and finding it filled with all kinds of crackers, candy, pretzels, and all sorts of other sweets. Then imagine that you are opening the box while being in harms way thousands of miles from home.

This was the topic of a presentation given by Cindy Emens to the Apex Lions. The boxes of goodies were filled by seniors at the Cary Senior Center as part of Operation Sweet Tooth headed by Cindy Emens.

Cindy explained how the boxes were packed and mailed to our servicemen and women serving overseas. Names and addresses are obtained through relatives, friends, churches, etc.

Monies to pay for postage and the sweets is obtained through donations. Shipping costs $11.30 per box.

Several touching letters of appreciation from soldiers in Afghanistan received by Cindy were read. They said how much receiving the packages meant to them, explaining how they shared them not only with their fellow comrades but also with the local people.

To help with this project the Apex presented Cindy with a check for $300. Anyone wanting to make a financial donation can contact Cindy Emens at 919-465-9170.
