There is no question the members of the Peak City Blue Project have music in their souls.

Just as importantly, they also have plenty of charity in their hearts.

PCBP will perform in the Neighbors Helping Neighbors free concert Friday, Oct. 5 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in front of the Apex Chamber of Commerce building on Salem Street.

The concert, which benefits the Western Wake Crisis Ministry, will also feature The Harvey Dalton Arnold Blues Band. Peak United Methodist Church will provide concessions and children’s games.

Although the six members of PCBP believe in living life to the fullest and having fun, they also strive to help those in need.

One of the band’s founding members, Apex resident Larry Butterton, epitomizes that philosophy. The retired business owner and photographer has traveled to Haiti seven times to help bring aid to earthquake victims and also volunteered in Alabama in the aftermath of deadly tornadoes.

Helping others, said Butterton, is something the free-spirited band takes very seriously.

“We like to work benefit concerts,” said Butterton. “It’s important to help those in need.”

Western Wake Crisis Ministry is an organization that all the band members look to support. Al Bethune (keyboard and vocals), Butterton (vocals and percussion), Chris Kennedy (drums), Gary Miller (guitar) and Cliff Mitchell (guitar and vocals) are all Apex residents while bass player Mike Harris lives in Cary.

“We all live here and see the good work they do in our community,” said Butterton. “A lot of people are hurting and Western Wake Crisis Ministry does so much for them. This concert isn’t just about raising money, it’s also trying to raise awareness. We want everybody to know all the wonderful things they do.”

But despite the serious overtones to the band, PCBP’s shows are all about good times and great music. Their high-energy performances have connected with audiences throughout the area.

Performing an eclectic mix of foundation rock and blues, the band has developed quite a following since it formed three years ago.

“We’ve been asked to play a lot of different places and in front of standing-room-only audiences,” said Butterton. “It’s unbelievable. We are all in our sixties and we didn’t expect this kind of success. We keep getting all these gigs.”

As part of Neighbors Helping Neighbors initiative, Western Wake Crisis Ministry is also holding its 10th Annual Harvestfest Auction/Dinner and Golf Classic. The auction/dinner will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28 from 5:30-9:00 and the golf tournament will be held on Monday, October 29 with an 11 a.m. shotgun start. Both events are held at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary.
