HOLLY SPRINGS — Fresh off a stunning upset against Athens Drive, Apex jumped out to a 10-0 lead against Holly Springs on Friday night.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, it was pretty much all downhill from there.

The Golden Hawks scored the game’s next five touchdowns en route to a 35-17 victory in Tri-Nine Conference action.

The loss dropped Apex to 2-5 overall and 1-5 in the conference while Holly Springs improved to 3-4 and 2-3.

The Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game when freshman quarterback Ian Boyd scored on a 2-yard run. Matt Downey added a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter to boost the lead to 10-0.

The Golden Hawks began their comeback just before halftime, as quarterback Brett Hudspeth threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Kornegay.

Holly Springs dominated the third quarter and scored 28 unanswered points to take a commanding 35-10 lead.

The Cougars could only muster 56 rushing yards on 34 carries, and finished with 173 yards of total offense. The Golden Hawks, meanwhile, accumulated 367 yards of offense, including 218 yards on 46 rushes.

Apex hosts Northern Durham (5-2) Friday night in a non-conference game.
