The Cross Point boating access area at Harris Lake will be closed temporarily beginning Jan. 22, 2013, to receive a facelift.

“Facility improvements require the access area to be closed temporarily,” said John Crutchfield, Duke Energy director, Public Safety & Recreation Strategy Planning Services. “We regret the inconvenience, but closing the area will assist in protecting the safety of the public and allow construction crews to work safely and quickly.”

The work will be performed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. The improvements include construction of four boat ramps with floating docks, a new courtesy dock, handicap-accessible fishing pier, paved parking lot including handicap-accessible parking spaces, lighting, and additional access area signage.

The access area will remain closed until sometime in May 2013, when construction is expected to be completed, weather permitting. The public is advised to refer to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission’s website, www.ncwildlife.org, and the commission’s Facebook page for updates regarding closure status.

The Cross Point boating access is located in Chatham County on Cross Point Road. The boating public is encouraged to use the Hollemans Crossing boating access area located at 4420 Bartley Hollemans Road in Wake County to access Harris Lake during this construction period.

These improvements will enhance the access to the freshwater fishing lake. Harris Lake is a 4,100-acre lake that provides cooling water for Duke Energy’s Harris Nuclear Station.
