Many talented student actors through the years have performed in Apex High School’s fine arts department shows.
Now, for one night, it will be up to the school’s educators to carry on that tradition.
Faculty and staff will perform in the comedy musical “Bye Bye Birdie” on Saturday, March 2 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. The event is being held as a fundraiser for new theater curtains.
Principal Matt Wight, choral director Heather Copley, counselor Eric Chancy and Spanish teacher Suzanne Donders will lead the cast of more than 20 faculty members.
Director Gina Winter decided to hold the show after reading about a high school holding a similar fundraiser.
“I thought it was a great idea,” said Winter. “This other school was doing it for the whole (several night) run but I didn’t want to take those shows away from the students. But I thought we could have some fun and let the teachers do it for one night.”
Winter is taking a laid-back approach to the show. The teachers will only have one day of rehearsal and students will take care of most of the preparation.
“I’ve assigned students to walk through the roles with the teachers,” said Winter. “I realized we have a couple of wildcards in the group who will do whatever they want anyway. So, I’m just going to let it happen. It should be a good time for everybody.”
“Bye Bye Birdie” was written in 1962 and was the first musical to use rock and roll rhythms.
“People can expect a very fun night,” said Winter. “This show is funny anyway and it is so well written. Now, when you add all these great teachers, I think it’ll be wonderful.”
Admission to the show is $25 and tickets are available at the door or in advance at www.apexdrama.com.
A student-only version of “Bye Bye Birdie” will be performed March 1, 7, 8 and 9 at 7 p.m. at the high school. Tickets are $8 to $10 apiece and can also be purchased at www.apexdrama.com.
