Gary Duane Eichel, 61, of Apex went to be with his beloved Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 2, 2009.

He died in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family.

Gary was born in Viborg, SD on January 16, 1948 to William E. and Helga Andersen Eichel. He attended Nettleton Technical Institute of Columbus, Nebraska where he earned Certification in Architectural and Civil Drafting and Surveying.

He furthered his education at The University of Nebraska, graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science.

In 1985, he married Elizabeth Wright and they moved to Dallas, TX where Gary served as a construction superintendent for Wycliffe Associates. In later years, he worked as a remodeling contractor and also farmed with his brother, Bill, in SD.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Wright Eichel; children: Michelle, Sarah, Lydia and David Eichel; his mother Helga Andersen Eichel of Parker, SD; brothers: Bill Eichel of Parker, SD and Mr. and Mrs. Jim (Lori) Eichel of Chapel Hill, NC; and three nieces.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, William E. Eichel.

A memorial service celebrating Gary's life was held Sunday, July 5 at Apex Baptist Church with Rev. Phil Qualls officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Chuck Thompson and Pastor Bryan Wright.

An additional memorial service will be held for family and friends in South Dakota in August.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Wycliffe Bible Translators, P. O. Box 628200, Orlando, FL, 32862.

The family would also like to express their gratitude to Hospice of Wake County for the compassionate care given to Gary and the family in his final days.
