The Ugly Truth

By Barrie Bastianelli Daniels

Nothing new here… everything is as expected. Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler star in this romantic comedy that is just the everyday romantic comedy except they use bad words, albeit a lot of bad words and pretty bad ones too. It seems the movie wants to be a bit of “Something About Mary”, they did not make it. What they did make, was or is, a chick flick that if a guy has to see, he may laugh once or twice. Now I must say that there were laughs in the theater… I may have laughed once or twice but otherwise it was mildly entertaining. I did not hate it but did not love it and I was looking forward to seeing the film. It’s very hard to believe that Katherine Heigl could not find a date and the man that comes along, who is rude, uncouth and vulgar, is the man to make her able to find love. It has a few scenes that are sexual in nature that you may not even want your teens to see and there is not even a good reason to have them in. Gerard Butler lets us believe that only the pretty ladies can get a man… that’s it… be thin and pretty and you will find love. Can yet another film promote that ALL men are vulgar and do not care one bit about a personality, interests or brains on a woman and that ALL women are willing to change everything for a man. I might pass on this one or if I did go… just do not expect too much. Stay in and watch an old movie instead.

Adoration

By Barrie Bastianelli Daniels

OK, this is an indie film. This serious film is about a search for ones identity in a digital age. A story of a suicide bomber father is posted on the Internet and is received with sympathy, anger, and even support. Simon a teenager main character dabbles in both reality and lies. Simon's story takes a twist that involves all the characters in his life, it is a mystery playing with all kinds of prejudice but mainly religion and ones beliefs. Simone is raised by his uncle and has had a difficulty finding out the story of his parents death. The film was written and directed by Atom Egoyan, and starred Scott Speedman, Rachel Blanchard, Kenneth Welsh and Devon Bostick. Some folks may hate it but others may start to care about the characters. The film show you there are many sides to a story and nothing is ever as it seems. I actually liked the movie but it is a slow moving film that is quiet in nature. I would recommend the film but only to you that like and see the nontraditional films. I cannot say too much as I do not want to give anything away. Give it a try.

DVD – Sideways

By Barrie Bastianelli Daniels

With the new wine bar coming to Fuquay it may be a good time to revisit or view for the first time the film SIDEWAYS. The film is about two men entering middle age. Jack is going to marry so he and Miles embark on a week long road trip through California's wine country. Jack, a womanizer on his last week of women, and Miles, his depressed, sad, lonely friend, takes his pal on a wild ride, with many twists & turns, sort of a bachelor week. The film is very much a spoof on the serious wine drinkers – those of you who swirl, sniff, taste etc. Rent this classic that stars Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church. Enjoy with a bottle or two of a fine wine.
