The Apex Mitey Mite Green Cougars traveled to play the Winston Salem Indians in the Winston Salem's 6th annual Bowl game on Sat Nov 7.
The results was a dominating 21-0 win, the hoisting of the championship trophy, and most importantly a good time was had by all.
This marks the first time an Apex Mitey Mite team traveled outside the region for a bowl game. The Cougars came out ready to play and on the first defensive series Will Donohue had a sack, a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
The fumble recovery setup the cougars with great field position however 2 plays later the offense turned the ball back over to the Winston Salem Indians.
The defense continued their great play and forced the Indians to turn the ball over on downs. The defense was lead by great plays and bone crushing hits from Zane Brown, Josh Baker, John Heavener , Latyvn Daniel, Jack Capps, Cole Spector, Cade Spector, Ali Shaw, Nathan Bailey, Randy Santiago and Chris Gillis.
The offense took over and went to work moving the ball down the field. With only 10 minutes of instructions on picking up blitzes, the offensive line did a great job opening holes and passing lanes against a blitzing Indians defense.
The O-line was lead by Harris, Heavener, Steinman, Miskimon, Mcelrath and Daniel. The offense moved the ball behind strong runs by Josh Baker , Chris Gillis, and Zane Brown. Quarterback Jack Lowder completed passed to Ali Shaw and Zane Brown, however the drive stalled late in the 2nd quarter. The defense took the field and held the Indians to 4 and out and gave the ball back to the office with only a few minutes to go in the half.
The offense went back to work with runs by Baker and Ali and using all 3 times out to try to get the ball in then end zone. On the last play with a fake reverse ran by Baker came up about 10 yards short of the end zone to end the half with the score 0 - 0.
In the 2nd half the Cougars got the ball first and moved it down the field with runs by Baker an Brown following key blocks by Jordan Mcclendon and Shawn Kuye. The Cougar offense stalled again deep in the Indians territory with 2 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter with the score still 0 - 0.
On the 2nd play the Indian's offense took the ball off tackle for a 60 yard gain and scored 2 plays later to go up 7 -0. The Cougars got the ball back on a solid kickoff return from Kuye. However offense could not get anything going and had to punt the ball away. On the next drive with 6 minutes to go in 4th quarter the Indians scored once again on a long play. The Cougars played hard the rest of the way but came up short 14-0.
Winston Salem put on a great bowl game giving all of the kids trophies and awarding Zane Brown the MVP award for Mitey Mite Green.
The Apex Mitey Mite Green team finished 4-4 this year.
Thanks to all of the kids and parents for all of the hard work this year. We look forward to seeing all of you next year on the field. Jr. Pee Wee Black
The Jr. Pee Wee Black squad headed to the Wilmington, NC this weekend to play in the Port City Classic Bowl.
The Cougars would have to face off with the Swansboro Pirates who they knew absolutely nothing about. No idea on offense, no idea on defense, no idea on special teams. The best way to play in those circumstances is to have fun and play football, which is exactly what the Cougars did.
On the opening drive of the game, the Cougars drove the football down the field for their first score of the day. The offensive line of Alex Leudeke, Zack Keck, Clayton White, Andrew Ihle, Sy Snedeker, Dana Kelly and Max Pietchottka were truly dominant the entire game. The Cougars were able to move the ball up and down the field at will. After punishing running by Addison Pinkney, Hunter Mullins, Preston Davis, Carl Dean, Koen McConnell, Sy Snedeker and Dana Kelly, Pinkney broke a 35 yard run for a touchdown. The extra point was scored by Dana Kelly on a run where he also punished the Pirate defenders. Behind the rock solid play of QB, Ryan Schneider, receivers Harrison Wynne, Patrick Egan, Carl Dean and Zack Kenne and backs Pinkney, Mullins, Dean, McConnell, Snedeker and Kelly, the Cougars we able to easily score 2 more times before the end of the game.
The other half of the story was the Cougar defense. On this perfect fall day, the defense did not give up a single first down (except on penalties) and kept the Pirates offensive production to negative yardage. Everyone on the defensive side of the ball was swarming around whatever Pirate had the unfortunate luck to get the football.
The defensive line of Bo Ressler, Zack Keck, Alex Kenne, Alex Leudeke, Mike Davis, Eli Van Zanten, Andrew Ihle, Clayton White and Max Piechottka were absolutely dominating the line of scrimmage and did not give up more than a few feet at a time.
The linebacking corps of Hunter Mullins, Preston Davis, Addison Pinkney, Sy Snedeker and Dana Kelly were all playing at the top of their game and the results were evident.
Backing them up were the defensive backs who flew all over the field with reckless abandon. Hammer Wynne, Carl Dean, Zack Kenne, Patrick Egan and Koen McConnell were all involved in tackles in the backfield on multiple plays.
"This was a great way to finish up the season," said Head Coach, Mike Lindley. "We have a great group of guys who worked hard for 14-15 weeks, so a win like this really makes it all worthwhile. We really worked hard as a team and the boy's effort and pride really paid off when we held up that championship trophy!"
This game concluded the season for Jr. Pee Week Black but wrestling and lacrosse are right around the corner!
Midget Gold
The Apex Cougars Midget team pulled off its fourth consecutive victory this past Saturday while participating in the annual Nelli Bowl at Cary High School.
The Cougars were crowned champions by defeating the Greensboro Giants 27-19. Each player and coach received a medal, and the team was presented with a championship trophy.
Having been idle for two weeks the Cougars were anxious to get out on the field. They were, perhaps, too anxious which led to a rocky start. The Giants scored touchdowns on their first two series and Apex found itself in a hole
The Cougars finally found the end zone on a beautiful pass from quarterback Ricky Smith to Dorrell McClain.
The euphoria was short-lived as the Giants were able to find the end zone again shortly before the end of the first half. With the Cougars down 19-6 and four seconds remaining before halftime, kick returner Omari Lan took the kickoff into a pile was able to squirt out the other side all the way to a 70 touchdown return. The Cougars were successful on the extra point attempt and went into halftime trailing only 19-13. "The kickoff return by Omari really fired the team up, and the guys were able to build off that in the second half", says Coach Wayne Mckoy. "We had a lot of arm tackling in the first half, but completely turned that around."
And turn that around they did! The Cougars' defense pitched a shutout in the 2nd half. Omari Lan found Dorrell McClain on another beautiful pass play and McClain found the end zone a third time with some powerful running.
"The offensive line did a great job opening up holes for our backs this week", explains coach Mckoy.
"They really did an outstanding job, which allowed us to tighten up the defense so we could pass the ball."
Apex's offensive line consisted of Alan Freer, Nathan Lewis, Troy Athan, Tradd Deaver, Gunnar Bishop, Matt Marino, Zack Seibert, Austin Wilder, Elias Griffith, and Connor Frederiksen.
Defensively the Cougars were led by Davone Townsend, who had some big hits, along with Todd and Bryan Kohn. Also Robert Dougherty, Kevin Lucas, Steven Sanchez, Jerell Herndon, and Rimini Brown provided some excellent plays. The Cougars were without injured player Ramir Reams, but he was there on the sidelines cheering and coaching his teammates as if he were suited up for the game.
"I am really proud of these guys, we are growing not only as a team, but as a family", states Coach Mckoy. "We have tried to teach the guys that no man is bigger than the team, and that if they believe in themselves and each other, they are a tough team to beat. Our coaching staff has done a great job with the players, by taking out time from their busy schedules, and I would like to thank them also."
The Apex Midget Gold coaching staff consists of Wayne Mckoy Jr., Brandon Mckoy, Darrin McClain, Doug Thorpe, Kenny Bishop, Wayne Mckoy Sr. , and Scott Wilder.
"Not only do we have great coaches, but we also have a group of parents who have been very supportive and very loud all season, which kept the guys pumped and encouraged".
