Michael Rhodes, Physical Education teacher at Rand Road Elementary School, received recognition in August for having the Outstanding PE Program of the Year for Wake County Public Schools. On Nov. 13, he also won the North Carolina Physical Education Association’s Outstanding Program Award in a ceremony at the annual PEA conference in Winston-Salem.
Michael graduated from Garner High School in 1985. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Appalachian State University in 1989 where he was all conference in track his junior and senior years. Michael began his teaching career in Wake County in the fall of 1989. When Rand Road Elementary opened in 1990, he became its first physical education teacher.
He received his Master of Education degree in Health Education and Promotion from East Carolina University in 2006. The Wake County Autism Society named Michael its “Inclusion Teacher of the Year” in 2006. He lives in Fuquay-Varina with his wife, Susan and three sons.
