Three young area artists, along with their families and teacher, were honored by the Apex Lions as winners of this years Jim Stricker Peace Poster Contest Award.
All three winners are sixth graders at St. Mary Magdalene School in Apex.
The winners were: First place - Abaigeal Breakwell; second place - Sophia Lindem; third place - Alexa Anne Vargas.
The winners were presented with savings bonds and certificates of appreciation. Their teacher, Amanda Cadran, was also presented with a certificate of appreciation for all her help with the contest.
The Peace Poster Contest is a program of Lions Clubs International. Its purpose is to help generate peace among the youth of the world.
The theme of this years contest was the Power of Peace. As the winner of the local contest, Abaigeal was asked to include a brief statement on the theme. Her statement was: “Peace is measured by the calm of our hearts, not the strength of our power.”
The Apex Peace Poster Contest Award is named in honor of the late Jim Stricker. Mr. Stricker was a member of the Apex Lions and chaired this contest for several years. Before moving to North Carolina he was an art teacher in Indiana.
The Apex Lions meet on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 6:45 at the CC Jones Building on Holleman Street. For more information contact Club Secretary, Nick Somma, at 481-1888.
